McNeill Last Charge; An Account of a Daring Confederate in the Civil War Jefferson Waite 18461929 Duffey 9781374417687 Books

This slim volume is a reprint of a book about John Hanson McNeill and his rangers, Confederate partisans during the Civil War. Like the famous Mosby's Rangers, they distracted and harassed Union forces to make them less effective. McNeill operated mostly in West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley.

The book was written by Jefferson Waite Duffey, who served with McNeill's Rangers and turned out to be a good writer after the Civil War. It focuses on the final raid conducted by John McNeill, his fatal wounding and death. Since I live not far from Mt. Jackson, where McNeill was wounded, I was curious about the story. Many of the place names are familiar to me: Orkney Springs, Edinburg, Middletown, Rude's Hill, Moorefield... This story is an important contribution to Shenandoah Valley history.

Duffey mentions a couple of times that McNeill treated prisoners well because he had once been a prisoner himself. This was acknowledged during his final days when bedridden from his wounds, he was finally captured by Sheridan. Sheridan's surgeon stepped forward and said, "I was once a prisoner in your hands and your treatment was so magnanimous, I now hold myself ready to render you any service in my power." The next morning the surgeon brought him food and drugs, "not omitting a standard brand of liquid spirits."

Nonetheless, McNeill succumbed to his wounds. His son took over the leadership of McNeill's Rangers, and pulled off a daring raid described in another book by Duffey, Two generals kidnaped;: A complete account of the capture of Federal Generals George Crook and Benjamin Kelly [sic] by McNeill's Rangers,

A handful of photographs in this book include portraits of John McNeill, his son Jesse, and the Weller house where the elder McNeill was taken after being wounded.
