An emotionally riveting memoir, A Good Soldier perfectly captures the isolation and pain that can come from having a loved one with a mental illness.

When Ally Golden heads off to college, she breathes a sigh of relief; she is ready to discover herself, independent of her mother. However, this newfound freedom and several failed attempts at intimacy soon leave Golden feeling adrift. But even as she withdraws from the world, Golden feels an all-powerful emotional connection to the woman who raised her.

Moving into adulthood, Golden tries to envision a future in which she can begin her own family—as the mental decline of her mother reaches its lowest point. Will Golden be able to heal her relationship with her mother before it’s too late?

Golden’s raw honesty and stunning emotional insights will comfort anyone who has been on the chaotic and unpredictable journey with a mentally ill friend or family member.

A Good Soldier eBook Ally Golden

I ordered this book to give to a young woman whose father, whom she loves, and who does clearly love her in the way he can, is mentally ill. After reading it, I realized that my young lady's father is both far more functional and far more severely ill than the mother portrayed in the book, and that the drama in the book wouldn't even rival the drama in her life, so early in my reading of the book, I decided not to give it to her. Additionally, although it is possible that her father will end up in the same sort of condition as the mother in this book, I think that is both more and less hopeful than the future she has before her and I didn't want to put more worry or any false hope into her head. Rather, I just wanted a book that would help her feel less alone and I didn't end up thinking this book would ultimately serve this for her. However, immediately upon finishing this book, I did give it away to another young woman whose stepmother struggles with the same sorts of demons in the same sorts of ways and I did think it would serve as a good message of solidarity for her to see the author progressing through her young adult life successfully despite the parental insanity and mean-spirited words interspersed with loving messages and acts. This same young woman's biological mother also struggles with mental illness and may progress eventually to the depths of the mother in this book and I don't think it's a bad thing for this young woman to be warned of that possibility by reading this book. Therefore, although I didn't give it to the intended recipient, it only took me about 2 days to find someone else that I thought would benefit from this uncomfortable read.

A Good Soldier eBook Ally Golden Reviews

Ally Golden is an effective narrator because she's the opposite of a victim. She understands her own flaws and is honest about the role she played in her life circumstances. A Good Soldier encourages us to examine our own lives and make proactive efforts to transform any poor hands we may have been dealt.
A riveting, eye-opening read that provides a close-up and unflinching view of what it is like to love someone suffering from mental illness. This book does not shy away from showing the heart-wrenching truth of this experience, but also tells the story of how one can cope with difficult circumstances and go on to thrive.
This was an amazing memoir that I recently ordered and read entirely in one day! The author, Ally Golden, courageously shared her struggles growing up with her mentally ill mother. The way in which she so honestly told her story was personally liberating. I connected to Ally with each turn of the page as her experiences eerily mirrored my own. I grew up with a mother very similar to Ally's. The struggle of constant guilt and despair over not having the unconditional love from a mom growing up and to this day is a battle I still fight. But, this book valIdated my feelings and brought me a sense of peace! I am grateful for finding such a gem and to Ally for sharing her story of hope, as that in itself was a comfort. I highly recommend this book to everyone!
A heartfelt memoir, and a page-turner to boot. Sure to be instructive to anyone grappling with mental illness in the family.
I was so moved by this memoir and couldn't put it down. For those who haven't been directly touched by mental illness, this account illuminates what it's really like to have a mentally ill parent. And for those who are familiar, I'm sure the author's unflinching descriptions of her experiences will ring true. Highly recommended.
"A Good Soldier" helped me understand the complexity of living with and loving a mentally ill mother. The author was brave to share her story of trying to be there for her mom while at the same time being strong enough to carve out a successful life outside of that. I am sure this book will speak to many people who may be going through a similar situation.
I finished this book last night. It was riveting, touching and heartbreaking surrounded by normalcy. I couldn’t put it down and stayed up late to finish it. It was so real and true -- written with such honesty. The author shares her real, unvarnished story and it gives meaning to anyone with devastating heartbreak growing up and getting through it – but especially going through this. I really admire Ally Golden for working her way through. It was a peek behind the curtain that most people don't see. I’ll never forget this book.
